The neighborhood urgently needs public space with leisure amenities and recreational and exercise facilities. Based on a public survey carried out by the neighborhood management two years ago, the Neckarvorland is to be developed step by step. The focus is on networking with the neighborhood and reducing the potential for conflict of different interests. In addition to the urban planning concept, restaurant services will also be introduced at selected locations to bring the district closer to the river and to stimulate revitalization.
The parking spaces on Dammstraße have been reorganized to accommodate 74 parking spaces in the future instead of the 44 at present. The measures on Dammstraße will also include the introduction of a continuous 30 km/h zone, the lighting will be renewed and new lighting poles will be installed along the Neckardammweg.
New provisional use could be created on the former parking area around the Einraumhaus (one-room house) at the Alten Messplatz (old fair ground) between the old train station and the discounter store LIDL. The cooperation between the City of Mannheim, MWSP and the non-profit association POW! e.V. (consisting of the architectural office Yalla Yalla!, the filmmaker Phillip Kohl and the artist and operator of the Einraumhaus e.V. Philipp Morlock) created the sports, games and meeting place "ALTER“.
The redesign of the area creates a connection to the river, strengthens the leisure quality and promotes active sporting use. In addition, sports and game equipment can be rented free of charge. A social worker accompanies the events on site every day. For a stronger connection between the Alter Messplatz, the ALTER and the Neckar riverbank, the entire street area has been designated with blue paint.
The association oversees the operation of the area, while the city and MWSP have created the necessary legal conditions and provided the start-up financing. Although this is a temporary project, the high frequency of use of the square clearly shows how much the commitment involved acts as a signal in to the district.
